Teams Confirmed for 7th York International 9s

 

The 7th York International 9s Rugby League festival will be held on Saturday 5th July 2008 at Heworth ARLFC, Elm Park Way , York , YO31 1DX

 

This year admission prices have been reduced in order to make the event as accessible as possible for all people. Admission £5 adults, £1 Concessions.

 

The Festival comprises three competitions and is supported by The City of York Council.

 

The main competition is the Fairfax Cup which this year has the following teams:

 

Barrie McDermott’s Ambassadors are the holders of The Fairfax Cup and will bring a mix of young Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Carnegie players as well as some celebrities and ex Super League stars hopefully including Lee Jackson, Gary Connolly, Terry O’Connor and others to be confirmed.

 

As usual the Ambassadors will play with a smile on their faces and will be supported by a great following as well as Ronnie the Rhino.

 

York   City Knights. The knights will be fielding a strong team made up of academy players many of whom have come through the development programme at the knights.

 

The British Army. Have been involved since the beginning of the York 9s and recently won The Cheltenham 9s. The aim of the Army Rugby League is “to enable Soldiers to play Rugby League”. They will come with the aim of “one day winning the tournament with a mixture of Fijian flair and British control”

 

2 Lancs Regiment.  Current Army 9s Rugby League Champions based at Catterick.

 

The Ironsides. A team that represents the amateur clubs in the York area. This year Chris Smith the ex St Helens and Hull start will again be player Coach and will be assisted by ex Bradford , St Helens and GB star Paul Newlove. Joining the local players this year will be Adrian Leek the ex Batley and Huddersfield Giants Hooker

 

York   Rugby   Union . Another team that has been a constant since the start of the York 9s seven years ago. They always come well prepared and compete very strongly in this code of Rugby

 

Police Sport UK . The Police team are previous winners of The Archbishop Dolben Cup and will come ready to make a challenge for The Fairfax Cup

 

Milford Marlins. Milford celebrates its 40th anniversary this season after been formed in 1967/68 in the Kirkstall area of Leeds . Having just missed out on promotion this year they hope to win The Fairfax Cup.

 

The Archbishop Dolben Cup is for developing teams and comprises the following teams:

 

York Tigers (Combined York University/College players)

 

York Locomotive (New Summer Conference side that have made an impressive start to their season.)

 

Northallerton Stallions (New summer Conference side doing well in their opening season)

 

Cattledogs (A York area team for developing players)

 

Heavy Woollen Donkeys (independent club from the Batley / Dewsbury area. They offer an outlet for anyone wanting to try their hand at RL and have recently played in Ireland and Holland )

 

Fife Lions (Scottish League winners for the 4th year in a row)
